Vindhyachal Thermal Unit VII: 18,500 MT Steel EPC
Completed: 2024 • Sector: Power Plants
The Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station is one of India's most critical energy installations. For Unit VII, MAXXINFRA was entrusted with the complex Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) package of 18,500 MT of structural steel, representing a milestone in heavy industrial fabrication.
Project Scale & Scope
The scope encompassed the detailing, fabrication, and site erection of massive boiler structures, auxiliary platforms, and complex pipe rack systems. Given the high thermal and mechanical loads of a power plant environment, the project required absolute adherence to IS 800:2007 and high-grade IS 2062 steel.
Technical Challenges & Solutions
1. Complex Heavy Framing
The boiler structure involved built-up sections with material thicknesses exceeding 40mm. To ensure precision, MAXXINFRA utilized robotic Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) to achieve 100% penetration welds, followed by rigorous Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to guarantee zero-defect joints.
2. Logistical Synchronization
Moving 18,500 MT of steel from the workshop to the site required a precisely coordinated supply chain. Using an ERP-driven dispatch system, each member was barcoded at the workshop, allowing the site team to track and unload members in the exact order required for the erection sequence.
3. 24/7 Erection Sequence
To meet the client's aggressive commissioning window, MAXXINFRA deployed a multi-crew erection team operating around the clock. By leveraging 3D BIM models for site coordination, we achieved "Zero-Clash" erection, entirely eliminating site rework.
Outcome
Unit VII was successfully completed in 2024, with the structural steel package delivered ahead of the critical path schedule. This project stands as a testament to MAXXINFRA's capability to handle large-scale, high-stake infrastructure with engineering precision and operational transparency.
