Critical Quality Control Protocols in Steel Erection

Steel Erection Quality Control

The successful delivery of a structural steel project relies not just on accurate fabrication in the shop, but on meticulous Quality Control (QC) during site erection. Even the most perfectly fabricated beams can fail if erection protocols are ignored. Here is an overview of standard QC practices.

1. Pre-Erection Checks

Quality control begins before the steel is lifted.

  • Foundation Handover: Surveyors must verify that the anchor bolts cast into the concrete pedestals align perfectly with the base plate coordinates and are at the correct elevation.
  • Material Inspection: As steel arrives on site, it must be inspected for transit damage, and the protective coating must be checked for scratches.

2. Bolting Quality Control

For structures relying on High Strength Friction Grip (HSFG) bolts, proper tensioning is critical.

  • Torque Verification: Bolts must be tightened using calibrated torque wrenches to achieve the specified pre-tension.
  • Turn-of-Nut Method: Often used as a secondary visual verification where the nut is rotated a specific degree past the "snug-tight" condition.

3. Site Welding Protocols

While bolted connections are preferred, some field welding is unavoidable.

  • Welder Qualification: Only certified welders should perform site welding.
  • Consumable Control: Electrodes must be stored in baking ovens to prevent moisture absorption, which causes hydrogen embrittlement.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Critical site welds undergo Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT), Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), or Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to detect subsurface flaws.

4. Alignment and Plumbness

Throughout the erection sequence, surveyors use total stations to continually verify the plumbness (verticality) and alignment of the columns. The structure must be temporarily braced and guys adjusted to bring the frame within acceptable IS code tolerances before final tightening of bolts.
